Maine is the most forested state in the continental US — more than 89% of its land is covered by trees, primarily the spruce-fir and northern hardwood forests of the boreal transition zone. The state's Downeast coast supports a globally rare maritime boreal community, and northern Maine's vast unbroken forest is among the most important breeding habitat in the eastern US for neotropical migratory songbirds.
