Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau and Great Smoky Mountains are globally recognized for their temperate forest biodiversity — the Smokies have more tree species than all of northern Europe combined. The state's mixed mesophytic forests, limestone cedar glades (a globally rare community found almost exclusively in Tennessee and Kentucky), and Tennessee River watershed wetlands all harbor native plant communities of exceptional conservation value.
